Our Take

McKay Moffitt

If you're an Air Canada fan (or just travel across the Star Alliance network), the Aeroplan Card should be on your radar. It usually offers a pretty generous welcome offer, has great rates on dining and groceries, comes with the ability to earn automatic elite status, and more.

Plus, Aeroplan points are just great to have at your disposal. They're good for Air Canada flights and for booking with partners like United, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines. And, that first free checked bag for up to eight people on the same reservation? Sold. This card for sure pays for itself, especially if you're looking to use points for top-tier award redemptions.

How to make the most of your

Aeroplan® Credit Card

[.dontreco] We don't recommend: Redeeming for gift cards or merch [.dontreco]

You can use your points for gift cards or "stuff" but you'll rarely get more than one cent per point. So, flights are pretty much always the move.

[.sometimesreco] We sometimes recommend: Using Pay Yourself Back [.sometimesreco]

Aeroplan's Pay Yourself Back tool lets you wipe travel, dining, or grocery purchases (even your annual fee) from your statement. It's flexible, but it's generally less valuable than booking flights outright.

[.alwaysreco] We always recommend: Using Aeroplan points for flights [.alwaysreco]

Aeroplan has a crazy good selection of partners. Whether you're flying Lufthansa first class over to Europe or just flying Air Canada more locally, Aeroplan points have some serious sweet spots. Dynamic pricing is something to be aware of, but you can still snag cheap seats for fewer points than you'd think.

Best Complementary Cards

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

If airport lounges are your happy place, this is a great card to pair with your Aeroplan Card. The Venture X comes with Priority Pass SelectTM membership (after enrollment) and unlimited visits to Capital One Lounges, something the Aeroplan card doesn’t offer. It also earns miles on every purchase, and since you can transfer Capital One miles directly to Aeroplan at a 1:1 rate, you’re basically doubling your ability to rack up points for flights.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is a great sidekick to the Aeroplan Card because it earns glorious Chase Ultimate Rewards points that you can transfer 1:1 to Air Canada Aeroplan. That means you can pool points from two completely different cards to book the same award tickets, which is a massive advantage when you're topping off for a big redemption.

Who Should Get The

Aeroplan® Credit Card

?

1. The International Traveler

If you're idea of a good time involves flights to Japan, Paris, Cape Town, and so on, this card if a great option for you. Aeroplan points can unlock some serious flights with over 45 partners like United, Singapore, and Lufthansa (to name a few). And with no foreign transaction fees, you can swipe on your trips worry-free.

2. The Foodie

My grocery bill only seems to climb these days. But honestly? I eat out a ton, too. 🫠 If you spend big on groceries and dining, the Aeroplan card will pay you back well (in points). Plus, you're looking at an extra 500 bonus points for every $2,000 you spend in a month, so that everyday spending racks up rewards quickly.

3. Families and Group Travelers

Taking the whole crew on a trip? Air Canada flights become way more affordable with this card if your wallet. You and up to eight people on the same reservation will get a free first checked bag, which is a nice little perk. And, with automatic Aeroplan 25k status, you'll be first in line for upgrades and priority check-in.

Who Should Not Get The

Aeroplan® Credit Card

?

If you don't have solid credit or you're unlikely to fly Star Alliance or Air Canada, you might not see great value here. And, if you can't commit to paying off your statement in full, we'd recommend skipping travel cards altogether. With great miles and points fun comes great responsibility!
