Family travel is expensive.
It doesn't have to be.

We looked at your survey answers and love to hear that you mainly travel with your family. You love a good resort or all-inclusive. But every time you book, you feel the bill in your chest a little bit. Sound familiar? Good news: there's a real way to take a chunk out of that cost, and it's simpler than you think.

Show Me How

A family of four going on a week-long trip is a serious financial event. Here's what the math looks like before points enter the picture.

The right travel card doesn't make family travel free. But it can absolutely cover the flights, take a serious bite out of the hotel bill, and put hundreds of dollars back in your pocket. That's what we're building toward.

Cost Snapshot — Family of Four

  • Round-trip flights for a family of four (domestic): $1,000-$2,400
  • All-inclusive or resort stay, 5-7 nights: $1,500-$6,000
  • Food, activities, and the stuff you didn't plan for: $500-$800+
  • Total trip cost: $3,000+

How points offset a family trip

01

You Earn a Welcome Offer

Apply for a card, spend a set amount in the first few months, and unlock a big lump of points. On most cards we recommend, that welcome offer alone is worth $750 to $1,000+ in travel: enough to cover the flights for your next family trip before you've even paid the annual fee.
02

Everyday Spending Builds Your Balance

Groceries, gas, school supplies, streaming services — all of it earns points. You're not changing what you buy. You're changing where the credit goes. A family running $3,000-$5,000/month through a good travel card can accumulate trip-funding points surprisingly fast.
03

You Use Points to Cover the Big Stuff

Flights are the easiest win. Transfer points to an airline partner and book awards for the family. Hotel points work similarly: a four-night stay at a Hyatt property can run 60,000-80,000 points, often worth $800-$1,000+ you're not spending out of pocket.
04

Regular expenses = regular trips

Year one is the biggest bang for your buck (thanks to the welcome offer). But ongoing earnings on your regular household spend means you're never starting from zero again. Most families who commit to a solid card setup find they can subsidize one solid trip per year from points alone.

One card. A serious amount of value.

If you're new to travel rewards, the best thing you can do is start with one card that earns flexible points, covers your biggest spend categories, and comes with a welcome offer big enough to actually do something with. This is that card.

Why it fits

This card is an earning machine in categories in which families tend to spend a lot. You'll earn 3x points on dining and online grocery (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs), so you can order groceries in advance and spend more time with the fam. It's also a road trip warrior, earning 3x points on gas stations and EV charging, and 3x on vacation rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo. Plus, you'll earn 2x on all other travel purchases. The $100 hotel credit is easy and flexible to use, and you're covered with some of the best travel insurance offered by any card. There's a reason this card is our number one choice for families.

Key perks:

$100 hotel credit, up to $120 Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS fee credit (every 4 years), comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency evacuation and transportation coverage (up to $100,000, 100+ miles from home), trip delay insurance, primary rental car coverage, and more

Cards worth adding once you're in the game

Once you've got the Sapphire Preferred earning well, these are the cards families typically add next. Each one either fills a gap, earns more on where families actually spend, or brings perks that make the trip itself easier.

That's the single best deal in domestic family travel.

Smart moves for families

Put Everything on One Card for 3 Months

The most common reason families miss a welcome offer is by splitting spending across too many cards. When you open a new card, consolidate everything onto it for the minimum spend window: groceries, gas, utilities, Amazon orders, all of it. Hit the threshold, then go back to normal if you want to. Or keep spending like this and earn even more. As long as you’re being responsible and paying off the card monthly, there’s no reason not to keep earning rewards.

Book Flights With Points, Not Cash

Flights are where points deliver the most obvious value for families. Hotel points can be extremely valuable too, but flights are the clearest dollar-for-dollar win when you're covering multiple seats.

Look for Hotels With Connecting Rooms

When redeeming hotel points, search for properties with family-friendly room configurations. IHG, Hyatt, and Marriott all have properties where you can book connecting rooms on points. Suites that sleep four are available on points too, and often at a better cents-per-point value than standard rooms.

Your Partner's Card = A Second Welcome Offer

If both adults in your household apply for separate cards, you each earn a separate welcome offer. That's two big point deposits instead of one. A coordinated two-card strategy (we call it two player mode in the biz) can generate enough points for a full family trip in the first 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really cover a whole family trip with points?

Realistically: flights, yes. Full resort cost, probably not. All-inclusives can be difficult to book on points because many are not part of major hotel loyalty programs. Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton do all have all-inclusive brands where you can use points, but there are a lot fewer of them than “normal” hotels. But you can absolutely use points to cover flights for four people, book hotel nights at a beachside Hyatt or Marriott, and use cash credits to offset resort fees. The sweet spot is covering the most expensive line items while paying cash for everything else.

What about travel insurance for families?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred has some of the strongest travel protections at its price point. Trip delay insurance kicks in after 12 hours and covers meals and lodging. Baggage delay covers essentials if your bags are late. There's even lost luggage reimbursement of up to $3,000. Always book travel with the card to ensure coverage applies and save all your receipts.

How do I hit the minimum spend without overspending?

Put your normal grocery run, gas, utility payments, streaming subscriptions, and any planned purchases on the new card for the first three months. If you're a family of four, you're probably already spending $2,000+ a month just on basics.

Is the Southwest Companion Pass worth chasing for families?

If you fly Southwest domestically at least once a year, the Companion Pass is one of the best deals in travel. One designated person flies free (just pays taxes) on every flight you book for up to two years. For a family, that's effectively cutting flight costs in half for one adult. The Companion Pass requires earning 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year; terms apply.

Will applying for a card hurt my credit score?

A new application triggers a hard inquiry that typically drops your score 5-10 points temporarily. That usually recovers within 3-6 months, and often ends up higher than before because your available credit increased. If you're planning to apply for a mortgage in the next 6-12 months, timing matters more. If you’re applying for a mortgage or refinancing, flag that with your lender before applying.

Start with one card. Use it for everything. Take the trip.

The family travel math isn't complicated once you get started. Pick up the Sapphire Preferred, run your normal spending through it for three months, and you'll have a hefty chunk of points ready to go before you've even thought about where you're going.
