If you’ve been reading Daily Drop for longer than just today, you’ve probably seen us hype awesome award redemptions… from the East Coast. 😑

And as someone who does not live anywhere near JFK or EWR or even within a 20-hour drive of those airports, I used to get soooo annoyed.

How come there’s never any amazing deals from the middle part of America?!

The truth is, there might be, but they’re few and far between and highly competitive because everyone stuck in the middle also wants that deal.

So what’s a sad Central Timer to do?

Well, my friends, that’s where the beauty of cheap positioning flights comes in.

What is a positioning flight?

It’s where — instead of paying an unreasonable amount of points for a flight from your hometown — you first fly to one of the major airports that does have award flight availability, and then you can take advantage of the deal!

While this sounds like an extra step — technically it is — and a potentially risky decision, there’s a basically foolproof way to make it work every time.

The trick? Turn your positioning flight into a stopover and make it part of your vacation.

The stopover solution

Instead of hoping your flight arrives with enough time to make your big international flight (because two separate airline bookings means your layover and transfer aren’t guaranteed) and praying against bad weather… fly in the day or night before.

Now, obviously this only works if you have enough PTO, but it’s worth considering if you can swing it.

Because if you can fly in the night before — or even earlier in the day — your award flight is protected from travel day mishaps and you might even be able to enjoy a new destination!

I actually just did this earlier this summer, so let me walk you through it.

A personal example

I’d been wanting to fly Singapore and Emirates business class, and they both have fifth-freedom routes between New York and Europe… but I live in Houston.

When I found availability last summer, I quickly booked the flights I wanted and decided to figure out the details later.

The details being that I would need to get to and from New York at the beginning and end of my trip. 😬

A couple of months later, I jumped on the Southwest app and searched for flights from Houston to New York and was presented with a few options:

• Fly to NYC the morning of my international flight

• Fly to NYC the night before my international flight

• Fly to NYC the morning of the day before my international flight

Flying the day of was a no-go because my international flight departed from JFK and Southwest doesn’t fly there, and changing airports seemed risky, so I was down to two options.

I realized I had enough Hyatt points to cover a free night at my fave NYC hotel, the Thompson Central Park New York, so I decided to take the earlier flight and add a little New York stopover to the trip.

That meant an early afternoon landing in NYC with time for a sit-down meal and a walk before turning in. Then a slow wake-up the next morning, a walk for coffee and a bagel, followed by a leisurely lunch in Central Park for the perfect summer afternoon.

We got to move at our own pace and enjoy ourselves before heading off to JFK to hit the lounge and catch our red-eye flight.

And honestly, that perfect afternoon in Central Park might have been one of the highlights of the whole trip. 🤷‍♀️

Bottom Line

Positioning flights are a great way to take advantage of award deals that may not originate in your hometown.

Being willing to re-position can save you a LOT of points — or allow for unique experiences and build a cooler trip.
