Love letters to food used to be handwritten. Mine now show up as statement credits and piles of American Express Membership Rewards points.
I work as a film director, which means my calendar rarely looks the same two weeks in a row. I split most of my time between Miami and New York City, and I’m often on the road for shoots or last-minute meetings. Through it all, one constant remains: I eat. A lot. 😋
That’s why the American Express® Gold Card feels tailor-made for me. It earns big on dining at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets while layering in credits that cover purchases I’d be making anyway.
Today, I’ll show you how those perks fit into my life, but you don’t need to live my crazy lifestyle to see the value. Whether you’re grabbing coffee before work, ordering takeout on a busy day, or treating friends to dinner, the Amex Gold’s benefits can work just as easily for you.
A Day in the Life With Amex Gold Dining Credits
To show how easy this is, here’s what a real workday looks like for me. Keep in mind, enrollment is required for most benefits, and unused credits do not roll over.
Morning Coffee With the Dunkin’ Credit

Perk: Up to $7 back each month at Dunkin’ (after enrollment, and when using your Amex Gold for payment)
Value: Up to $84 per year if you don’t miss a month
I swing by Dunkin’ for iced coffee and breakfast before a location scout. Boston was my college town, so Dunkin’ (yes, still “Dunkin’ Donuts” to me) will always feel like home. The $6 meal deal is especially clutch — it gets me a sandwich, hash browns, and coffee, which is basically my perfect early-morning fuel. With the $7 credit, that meal is practically free.
💡 Pro Tip: Set a calendar reminder at the start of the month so you don’t miss this credit.
Lunch Covered by the Uber Eats Credit
Perk: $10 in Uber Cash each month for U.S. rides or Uber Eats (after enrollment, and when selecting an American Express card for your transaction)
Value: Up to $120 per year
By midday, I realize I’m not leaving my desk. I open Uber Eats, and because my Amex Gold is linked and selected, there’s $10 of Uber Cash ready to use. Most months, I use it to cover delivery fees and a chunk of a bowl from Pura Vida. On paper, it’s just a credit. In practice, it feels like permission to pause for twenty minutes while the next draft renders.
Setup is simple:
Add your Amex Gold to the Uber app.
Toggle Uber Cash on.
The credit is automatically deposited into your account every month (and expires if unused).
🧠 Pro Tip: Use your Uber Cash for pickup orders to skip delivery fees and stretch the credit further.
Dinner Using the Resy Dining Credit (+ 4X Points)
Perk: Up to $100 annual statement credit ($50 semi-annually) at Resy restaurants (after enrollment, and when using your Amex Gold to pay)
Value: Up to $100 per year
Bonus: Still earns 4x points at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1x after that) on the full bill
If afternoons are for production meetings, then dinner is for clients. I booked a pitch dinner through Resy, and because my Amex Gold is linked, I get up to $50 back from January to June and another $50 from July to December. That’s up to $100 in total each year, just for booking and paying through Resy.
And here’s the kicker: paying for dinner still earns me 4x points (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1x after that) on the entire bill. It’s the kind of quiet win you only notice later, when those points suddenly turn into a flight for my next shoot.

Extra Meals and Treats With the Monthly Dining Credit

After dinner, I might use this credit to send a client a bottle from Wine.com as a thank-you. But if I don’t need a gift that month, I like being able to switch it up. The $10 can just as easily cover another quick lunch or even a slice of cheesecake for dessert 🍰. And because Grubhub works with so many restaurants, this is easily one of the most flexible perks on the card.
How Amex Gold Credits Add Up to Free Meals
Here’s the math if you use these credits every month:
Dining credit: $120
Uber credit: $120
Resy credit: $100
Dunkin’ credit: $84
Total value: Up to $424 per year. That’s already more than the $325 annual fee (see rates & fees), before you even count the points.
And those points add up fast:
4x points at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 per year, then 1x after that)
4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per year, then 1x after that)
3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or via American Express Travel®
Membership Rewards points transfer to over a dozen airline and hotel partners, which is how my daily meals eventually turn into flights.
Who Should Get the Amex Gold?
The Amex Gold is a strong fit if you:
Spend heavily on dining and supermarket runs
Want effortless monthly perks that fit into your life
Prefer flexible travel rewards over plain cash back
It’s less ideal if you rarely eat out, don’t use Uber, or would rather earn simple flat-rate cash back instead of travel rewards.
Bottom Line
The American Express® Gold Card doesn’t just reward food — it rewards everyday life. Whether I’m bouncing between NYC and Miami or heading off on a shoot abroad, the credits and 4x points always fit into my routine.
From a Dunkin’ breakfast to a late-night Five Guys run, every credit adds up, and every point brings me closer to my next trip. Lunch today? It might just be tomorrow’s flight abroad.
