Deal Alert: Madrid Round Trip for 36k Points

We ran a Madrid deal about a month ago; Orlando to Madrid, lie-flat business class, 51k points. It was a great deal. It was a great deal specifically for people who live in Orlando, or for people willing to buy a separate ticket to get themselves to Orlando first.

I live in Columbus, and that second part is the entire story of my travel life. A deal lands, I get excited for about ninety seconds, and then I start doing the arithmetic on getting to the airport where the deal actually lives. Flight to JFK. Hotel near JFK in case of weather. I know for some of my colleagues that positioning makes sense and helps get you the best deals - I haven’t had much luck with that in the Midwest. It’s usually about $50 - $100 cheaper for me to position somewhere else… and it’s not worth the hassle to me.

But this deal is genuinely exciting for those of us not living near a major hub airport! Columbus (CMH) to Madrid (MAD) is pricing at 36k Delta SkyMiles round trip, on one ticket, out of my actual airport. And Columbus isn't special here... Wichita, Tulsa, Boise, Savannah, Greensboro, and about eighty other cities are all sitting in the same band.

This one's tagged as a rare deal on our end, so I wouldn't sit on it too long. Let's get into the details.

Why This Deal Is Amazing

Start with the cash comparison. Pro is showing a comparable fare around $900 round trip. Back out the roughly $54 you'd owe in taxes and fees no matter how you pay, divide what's left by the 36,000 SkyMiles it costs, and you land at up to 2.35 cents per SkyMile. That's not our "epic value" tier, which starts north of 4 cents around here, but it clears the 1.5 cents most people treat as the "yes, that was a good use of points" benchmark by a comfortable margin.

The part I find more interesting is the departure city list. Chicago (ORD) is 37k. Wichita (ICT) is 38k. San Francisco (SFO) is 39k, and so is Bozeman (BZN). Newark (EWR) is 35k, and so is New York LaGuardia (LGA).

You will still connect somewhere, most likely Atlanta, Detroit, or New York, because Columbus doesn't have a transatlantic nonstop and probably won't for a few years yet. But connecting on one reservation is a completely different animal from buying your own way to a gateway city. Delta owns the whole journey, which means Delta owns the rebooking if the first leg runs late. A positioning flight you bought separately owes you nothing.

Across more than eighty departure cities on this deal, the spread was roughly 35k to 39k, which means leaving from home instead of from New York often costs about three thousand points. Three thousand points is a lot cheaper than a positioning ticket and a hotel night in Queens.
